A Team Approach
Specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation, our Medical Directors lead a highly qualified team of nurses and therapists to provide a coordinated program of rehabilitative care. HealthSouth's team approach engages rehabilitation experts from many disciplines, including:
- Rehabilitation Nursing - Implement each patient’s medical care program as directed by his or her physician
- Occupational Therapy - Design and deliver activity-based therapy to promote independence in the areas of self care, home management and community reintegration
- Physical Therapy - Evaluate and design a treatment program to address limitations in physical function, mobility and safety
- Psychology - Provide supportive services to assist the patient and family in adjusting to their disability
- Respiratory Therapy - Ensure proper respiratory function through services such as oxygen supplements and
aerosol treatments - Speech-Language Pathology - Assess and treat individuals with communication and comprehension disorders, cognitive difficulties and swallowing disorders
- Dietary and Nutritional Counseling - Supervise all meals to ensure patients receive the necessary nutrition
- Case Manager - Coordinate with the physician to ensure the patient's needs are met and involve the family and other caregivers in the patient's rehabilitation
Stroke Rehabilitation Centers of Excellence
HealthSouth's Stroke Rehabilitation Center of Excellence internal recognition program highlights the accomplishments of HealthSouth hospitals that have exceeded established benchmarks in clinical programming and patient outcomes for the treatment of stroke.
Some of those benchmarks include the program being led by a board-certified physician with expertise and specialized training in stroke. The hospital's medical staff includes specialty physicians in the areas of neurology, cardiology, gastroenterology, urology, and pulmonary and internal medicine.
HealthSouth Stroke Rehabilitation centers of Excellence employ treatment teams of specially trained clinicians in the areas of physical, occupational and speech therapies, in addition to nursing. These treatment teams meet weekly to develop individualized courses of treatment for patients. The course of treatment could include a combination of the following specialty programs: cognitive retraining, behavior management, comprehensive spasticity management, neuropsychological testing and treatment, augmentative communication, driving education, and gait and balance training.
HealthSouth stroke teams also meet with the patient and family to obtain input for the plan of care. Structured family education series provide caregivers disease-specific information on prevention, medication management and coping strategies.
HealthSouth Rehabilitation centers of Excellence provide discharge planning and continuing education initiatives to stroke patients in the form of vocational and community re-entry education, transitional living, home evaluations and therapeutic home visits. Stroke support groups are also available to patients for follow-up care every other month.
Outpatient Therapy Services
HealthSouth's inpatient rehabilitation hospitals provide a smooth transition from inpatient rehabilitation to outpatient therapy.
All of our hospitals offer outpatient therapy with services available at the hospital or at a nearby freestanding clinic.
HealthSouth's outpatient rehabilitation centers treat people of all ages and offer specialized rehabilitation programs for pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric populations.
